Building Resilience in Sderot

The Israel Magen Fund of Canada is delivering vital mental health and family therapy programs in the South to address the psychological impact of years of rocket fire and trauma.

Sderot is a developing community located less than a mile from the Gaza border. The population is expected to reach 50,000 in the next few years. As the city grows, so does the need for services, especially those in the mental health field. Suffering from ongoing security threats, residents struggle emotionally to cope with this reality. Most of them suffer from anxiety, depression, PTSD, insomnia, fear of noise, nightmares and bedwetting among children.

To assist residents in coping with the security situation and its implications, the Resilience Center in Sderot, established in 2008, provides residents free of charge emotional therapy, community resilience programs and prepares them for future emergencies. The Center also acts as an “emergency room” for emotional trauma victims in the event of an emergency.

Parents are particularly in need of guidance and assistance with various challenges they face as their child grows. To meet growing demands, Sderot is establishing a new and improved Resilience Complex. This new complex is being built, including the Parenthood Home for Family Therapy, which provides family therapy and professional guidance on appropriate responses to children. There will be a PTSD Research and Convention Center to promote community resilience and conduct research on trauma.

Ashdod Rehabilitation & Therapy Centre

Bringing Vital Care to Southern Israel

The Ashdod Centre will deliver vital rehab care to southern Israel’s most vulnerable patients.

The Ashdod Rehabilitation & Therapy Centre is set to become a vital resource for southern Israel, providing critical medical and rehabilitative care to trauma victims, children with disabilities, and pediatric cancer patients.

Southern Israel faces a severe shortage of rehabilitation services, a situation made worse by the October 7 war. Nearly 30% of wounded patients and the majority of war victims are from the south, putting immense pressure on an already strained healthcare system. With only 11 rehabilitation centres in the region compared to 43 in central Israel, wait times can exceed a year. Children with disabilities and cancer patients are often forced to travel long distances to receive the care they need.

The Ashdod Rehabilitation & Therapy Centre aims to address these urgent challenges by offering timely, accessible, and high-quality treatment close to home. The facility will include rehabilitation clinics, a hydrotherapy pool, modern medical equipment, daycare services, and educational spaces. Conveniently located near the Samson Assuta Ashdod University Hospital, it will serve hundreds of patients each month and become a cornerstone of care for the region.
